Liverpool has booked a place in the final of the English Football League (EFL) Cup after a commanding 4-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday. This win came in the second leg of the semi-final, allowing Liverpool to advance with an aggregate score of 4-1.
In the first leg held in London, Tottenham secured a narrow 1-0 victory. However, Liverpool turned the tide in the return match at Anfield. Despite an early setback when referee disallowed a goal from Dominik Szoboszlai for offside in the 30th minute, Liverpool quickly found their rhythm. Just four minutes later, Cody Gakpo opened the scoring, converting a cross from Egyptian star Mohamed Salah.
Tottenham faced further challenges when Brazilian striker Richarlison sustained an injury just before halftime. He had to leave the field, making way for new signing Matheus Tel from Bayern Munich.
The second half saw Liverpool continue their offensive onslaught. Just six minutes in, Mohamed Salah doubled the lead with a well-taken penalty. The Egyptian international confidently slotted the ball into the net, putting Liverpool firmly in control.
In the 76th minute, Szoboszlai redeemed himself by scoring Liverpool’s third goal. He received a precise through ball from Conor Bradley and finished with composure, solidifying Liverpool’s place in the final.
The scoring did not stop there. Virgil van Dijk added a fourth goal for Liverpool, heading in a corner taken by Alexis Mac Allister. This goal capped off a stellar performance from the home side.
With this victory, Liverpool has reached the EFL Cup final for the 15th time in its history. The club has claimed the title ten times, with the most recent triumph occurring last season. They have also finished as runners-up on four occasions.
On the other hand, Tottenham’s struggles continue as they sit in 14th place in the league standings. Meanwhile, Liverpool leads the table and enjoys a positive run under Dutch coach Arne Slot, who took over at the beginning of the season after joining from Feyenoord Rotterdam.
Liverpool will face Newcastle United in the final, scheduled for March 16. This match promises to be an exciting showdown as both teams vie for the prestigious trophy.
