On Tuesday, October 3, 2023, the Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Major General Salem Al-Saqtri, visited the Rehabilitation Project of the Dockyard Landing Center in the Al-Mualla district. This initiative is part of a broader effort to develop fisheries in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, funded by the International Development Association through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

High-Level Delegation from the World Bank

Accompanying Minister Al-Saqtri was a high-level delegation from the World Bank, led by Regional Director for Egypt, Yemen, and Djibouti, Stefan Jimbert. The delegation reviewed the project’s key components, which include:

  • An ice factory to enhance the value chain and reduce fish waste
  • Display halls and auction facilities
  • A solar energy system
  • Support service centers

Strategic Importance of the Dockyard Center

Minister Al-Saqtri emphasized that the landing center represents a strategic project benefiting multiple governorates. He highlighted its role in organizing fish marketing and minimizing waste. Furthermore, he noted the project’s direct impact on improving the living conditions of fishermen and enhancing food security.

The minister stressed the importance of involving fishing cooperatives and local communities in managing the facilities. This approach will ensure sustainability and promote transparency.
