Lebanon insists on the continued presence of UNIFIL amid international pressure to gradually end its mission.

Lebanon Reaffirms Support for UNIFIL Amid International Pressure

As the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) approaches its expiration at the end of this month, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has reiterated the country’s commitment to maintaining international forces in the south. He emphasized that UNIFIL should remain until the full implementation of Resolution 1701, which includes the complete deployment of the Lebanese Army along the international border.

Importance of Cooperation with UNIFIL

During a meeting with UNIFIL Commander Major General Diodato Abagnara, President Aoun highlighted the significance of ongoing collaboration between the Lebanese Army and the UN forces. He also stressed the need for coordination with local communities in southern Lebanon, especially amid rising regional tensions and concerns about a potential security vacuum.

Security Council Discussions on UNIFIL’s Future

This stance comes as the United Nations Security Council begins discussions on a draft resolution proposed by France to extend UNIFIL’s mandate until August 31, 2026. The draft includes a clause expressing the Council’s intention to work towards a gradual withdrawal of UNIFIL, positioning the Lebanese government as the sole guarantor of security in the south.

Opposition from Israel and the United States

The proposal faces opposition from Israel and the United States, both of which advocate for a reduction in UNIFIL’s role. This debate intensifies amid ongoing discussions about the effectiveness of UNIFIL in monitoring the implementation of Resolution 1701, which calls for Hezbollah’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon and the cessation of armed presence in the region.

Challenges in Implementing Disarmament

Earlier this month, the Lebanese government approved a plan to disarm Hezbollah and consolidate arms under state control. This move was seen as a step towards activating the UN resolution. However, the government still confronts significant internal and regional challenges in executing this plan.

In summary, Lebanon’s commitment to UNIFIL reflects its strategic interests in maintaining security and stability in the region. As international discussions unfold, the future of UNIFIL remains a critical topic, impacting both local and regional dynamics.
