On Saturday, Israeli aircraft launched nine intense airstrikes targeting Haret Hreik, Burj al-Barajneh, and Shweifat in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon. This escalation marks a significant increase in military activity in the region.
The official Lebanese National News Agency reported that Israeli forces targeted a building in Haret Hreik, striking it twice. The attacks resulted in the complete destruction of the building and inflicted damage on surrounding structures. Additionally, the Israeli warplanes conducted strikes in the Amara neighborhood of Shweifat.
Before the airstrikes commenced, Israeli military spokesperson Avichai Adraee issued urgent warnings via X (formerly Twitter). He alerted residents in the southern suburbs, particularly those in specified buildings in Haret Hreik, about their proximity to Hezbollah facilities. Adraee stated that the Israeli military would soon take action against these targets. Similar warnings followed for the neighborhoods of Burj al-Barajneh and Shweifat.
Since Israel intensified its airstrikes on September 23, it has specifically targeted Hezbollah strongholds in southern Beirut, as well as in southern and eastern Lebanon. By the end of September, Israel announced the commencement of ground operations across the border. Reports indicate that at least 1,500 people have died in Lebanon due to Israeli bombardments over the past month, according to a count by Agence France-Presse based on official data. Furthermore, over one million individuals have been displaced from their homes, as reported by Lebanese authorities.
Earlier today, Israeli broadcasting services noted that a “significant target” was destroyed as a result of their air operations in Lebanon. The ongoing conflict continues to escalate, raising concerns about the humanitarian situation in the region.
This series of airstrikes and the resulting casualties highlight the increasingly volatile situation in Lebanon, as tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue to rise.
