Israeli aircraft conducted a series of airstrikes on southern Lebanon and the western Bekaa Valley today, Sunday, raising significant questions about the effectiveness of the recently extended ceasefire agreement, which is intended to last for an additional 45 days.
Reports from Al Arabiya and Al Hadath indicate that the region of Sahmar in the western Bekaa Valley was subjected to consecutive airstrikes. In addition to this, Israeli forces targeted the areas of Jabshit and Tulin in the Marjeyoun district, as well as Zawtar al-Sharqiyeh in the Nabatieh district. Other towns, including Maifdoun, Shuqra, and Qabrihka, have also experienced artillery shelling from Israeli forces.
This military escalation comes on the heels of the third round of Lebanese-Israeli talks that took place in Washington on Thursday and Friday. During these discussions, both sides reached an agreement to extend the ceasefire that was due to expire today. In this context, the U.S. State Department has announced another round of negotiations scheduled for June 2 and 3.
In response to the airstrikes, Hezbollah has reiterated its rejection of direct negotiations, urging the Lebanese government to withdraw from these discussions. The group has emphasized that it will not engage in any dialogue concerning its weaponry during the Washington talks. Since the onset of hostilities on March 2, Israeli attacks have led to over 2,900 fatalities in Lebanon, with more than 400 deaths occurring since the ceasefire began in mid-April.
Furthermore, the bombardment has led to the displacement of over one million individuals from southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut. Israeli forces have also infiltrated numerous border villages, leaving homes in ruins. The ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region necessitates urgent action to ensure the safety and well-being of civilians.
