The International Criminal Police Organization, known as Interpol, confirmed that artificial intelligence (AI) facilitates cyber threats by enhancing existing criminal methods such as fraud and deception. However, it does not fundamentally change the nature of cybercrime.
In a statement to CNBC during the Singapore Tech Week, Bjorn R. Watney, Interpol’s Global Head of Information Security, explained that AI increases the speed and scope of attacks. It allows fraudsters to target multiple victims simultaneously. Additionally, translation technologies and digital identities complicate the distinction between genuine and fraudulent interactions.
Watney expressed particular concern regarding agent AI, which can take actions on behalf of users. He warned that errors could lead to serious physical consequences, especially with the growing use of AI in self-driving cars and vehicles.
He noted that the high level of trust people place in technology raises risks, particularly compared to sectors like finance, where users tend to exercise greater caution.
Watney advised companies to focus on preventive measures. They should identify what he termed “crown jewels,” which are the most critical assets for their operations. Understanding who might target these assets and the methods they use is essential.
He emphasized that defenses must align with the nature of threats, whether from opportunistic criminals or advanced persistent threats. Watney pointed out a gap in many companies between senior management and cybersecurity strategies.
