Workshop Highlights Achievements of Integrated Urban Services Emergency Project

Today, Dr. Nizar Bashihab, the Deputy Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, inaugurated a workshop in Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen. The workshop focused on reviewing the achievements of the second phase of the Integrated Urban Services Emergency Project, implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) with support and funding from the World Bank.

Strengthening Partnerships for Development

During his opening remarks, Dr. Bashihab emphasized the strong partnership between the Yemeni government, the World Bank, and UNOPS. He highlighted the importance of this workshop in evaluating the second phase of the Integrated Urban Services Emergency Project. Dr. Bashihab noted that such gatherings provide an opportunity to discuss the impact of implemented projects and interventions. He urged participants to identify areas for improvement and address shortcomings to enhance donor confidence in project outcomes and funding quality.

Furthermore, he expressed the government’s eagerness to expand cooperation and partnership with donors. He called for aligning funding with the priorities identified by government sectors and local authorities in liberated provinces.

Commitment to Collaborative Development

Zarouhi Tohma, the Senior Urban Development Specialist at the World Bank, spoke about the fruitful collaboration between the Yemeni government and UNOPS. She reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to strengthening partnerships to increase the implementation of various developmental and vital projects aimed at supporting Yemen.

Impact on the Yemeni People

Rehana Zawar, the Country Director of UNOPS in Yemen, expressed her hope that the project and its achievements would have a tangible impact on the Yemeni people. She praised the support provided by the World Bank and the collaborative efforts with government ministries and local partners during project interventions. Zawar encouraged participants to enrich the workshop with insights regarding future needs and required interventions in Yemen.

Overview of Project Achievements

The workshop included presentations attended by various officials, including agency heads and directors from ministries and funds. Participants reviewed an overview of the project, its components, and the achievements made in health, education, roads, energy, waste management, and solid waste management. The session also aimed to establish a vision for future service and project priorities.

This workshop marks a significant step in assessing the progress of the Integrated Urban Services Emergency Project, reinforcing the commitment of all stakeholders to support Yemen’s development needs.
