Efforts to Clear Landmines in Taiz
The Masam project, dedicated to clearing Yemen of landmines, successfully destroyed 5,977 explosive devices in Bab al-Mandab, located in the Taiz governorate. This operation marks a significant step in ensuring the safety of local communities.
Details of the Destruction Operation
The destruction process included a variety of munitions: 142 shells of different types, 2,758 fuses, and 2,998 assorted ammunition. Additionally, the operation disposed of 14 anti-personnel mines, 36 anti-tank mines, 9 hand grenades, 6 rockets, and 8 improvised explosive devices (IEDs). All actions adhered to established safety protocols.
Impact on Local Communities
Engineer Adeeb Rajab, a member of the Masam special task force, reported that this quantity represents the total collected by project teams over the past month from various areas along Yemen’s western coast. He emphasized that the demining teams retrieved these hazardous remnants from villages, farms, and grazing lands, where they posed a direct threat to civilians, particularly children, farmers, and shepherds.
Safety Precautions and Community Awareness
Rajab highlighted that the destruction process followed precise technical procedures. He urged residents in the western coastal regions to avoid approaching any suspicious objects or remnants of war. Tampering with these items can lead to significant risks to life and safety.
Conclusion
The ongoing efforts of the Masam project play a crucial role in enhancing the safety of communities in Yemen. By systematically eliminating explosive remnants, the project aims to create a safer environment for all residents.
