The organization Witnesses for Human Rights reported that a civilian sustained injuries from a landmine explosion while tending to sheep in the Naham district of Sana’a. The organization holds the Houthi militia responsible for the ongoing threat posed by landmines in areas under their control, citing a failure to clear contaminated sites or provide maps of these hazardous locations.
According to the organization’s statement, 50-year-old Musaad Ali Jahish was injured when a landmine detonated while he was herding sheep in the western part of the village of Baran, located in the Al-Ghafir area. This incident occurred along the road leading to the lower dam in Naham district.
The organization highlighted that this incident is part of a troubling pattern of landmine-related accidents documented in Naham over the past years. These incidents have affected men, women, children, shepherds, and farmers engaged in daily civil activities in villages, farms, roads, and grazing areas.
Witnesses for Human Rights emphasized that large areas of Naham remain contaminated with landmines and unexploded ordnance from years of conflict. They warned that the lack of engineering surveys, demining efforts, or effective warnings poses a continuous danger to the lives and safety of local residents and their livelihoods.
The ongoing landmine crisis in Yemen underscores the urgent need for comprehensive demining efforts and effective communication to protect civilians. The situation remains critical as communities continue to face the repercussions of past conflicts.
