The Traffic Police have reported alarming statistics regarding traffic accidents in the liberated provinces during the first half of July. These incidents resulted in 26 fatalities and left 213 individuals injured, including 78 with severe injuries. The financial losses from these accidents amount to approximately 82 million Yemeni Riyals.
According to data from the General Directorate of Driving and Control, the same period recorded 216 traffic accidents. These incidents included 119 vehicle collisions, 66 pedestrian knockdowns, 24 vehicle rollovers, and 6 crashes involving fixed objects. Additionally, there was one incident involving a fall from a vehicle.
The Traffic Police branches in the liberated provinces identified 8,864 traffic violations. These violations encompassed breaches of traffic rules, regulations, and signals. Such infractions disrupt the flow of traffic, posing direct risks to road users and increasing the likelihood of accidents.
The Traffic Police attributed the accidents to several factors, including speeding, overloading, reckless overtaking, driving against traffic, and distracted driving. Other contributing factors include driving while fatigued, random stopping, neglecting vehicle maintenance, and the poor condition of some roads.
Reports indicate that motorcycles remain one of the leading causes of accidents, primarily due to riders violating traffic rules. Additionally, the issue of underage children driving vehicles persists, along with some pedestrians failing to adhere to safe crossing practices. In light of these concerns, the Traffic Police have reiterated their call for all road users to comply with traffic laws to protect lives and property.
