Houthi militia abducts the head of the Teachers’ Club in Sana’a amid a widespread crackdown.

Houthi Militias Kidnap Yemeni Teachers’ Union Leader Amid Crackdown

The Houthi militia has once again kidnapped Abdul Qawi Al-Kumeem, the head of the Yemeni Teachers’ Union, in the political district of Sana’a. This incident coincides with a widespread campaign of abductions by the group, marking the anniversary of the September 26 Revolution.

Details of the Abduction

According to a post by the Teachers’ Union on X (formerly Twitter), masked gunmen in two vehicles, accompanied by a security detail, apprehended Al-Kumeem outside the main gate of the “Knowledge Treasures” school. He was taken to an undisclosed location.

Previous Detention and Torture

This marks the second time the militia has abducted Al-Kumeem. In October 2023, they detained him for six months, during which he endured torture. He was eventually released due to a significant decline in his health.

Leadership and Advocacy

Al-Kumeem leads the preparatory committee of the Yemeni Teachers’ Union, established in July 2023. He has spearheaded protests and strikes demanding the payment of salaries that have been suspended for nine years in Houthi-controlled areas.

Rising Concerns Over Human Rights Violations

This incident highlights the escalating crackdown by the Houthis on activists and union leaders. Human rights organizations are increasingly calling for an end to the militia’s violations against civilians.
