Floods Displace Hundreds of Families in Abyan and Taiz

A recent government report reveals that severe flooding in the provinces of Abyan and Taiz has adversely affected hundreds of displaced families. The floods, which occurred between August 16th and 18th, have led to significant damage to homes and shelters, highlighting the urgent need for aid.

Widespread Damage and Displacement

The Executive Unit for the Management of Displaced Persons’ Camps, in a preliminary damage assessment, documented the impact of heavy rains, floods, and strong winds across various regions in Abyan province on August 16th and 17th. According to the report, the natural disaster has affected 303 displaced families. The damage includes the destruction of numerous homes and shelters, negatively impacting both the displaced persons and the host communities. Specifically, the affected areas include 44 families in Kudmah La’awar, 69 families in Wadi Al-Kud, 20 families in Al-Makhzan, 20 families in Al-Nash, and 150 families in Jul Sanan and Jul Al-Sadah in Ja’ar, Khnafar district.

In Taiz province, the Executive Unit reported that heavy rains and resultant floods on August 17th and 18th caused severe destruction to shelters, non-food items (NFIs), and food supplies for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the districts of Cairo and Sala. A total of 242 displaced individuals living across nine sites in Cairo district and one site in Sala district were affected by the rains and floods.

Urgent Need for Aid

The report emphasizes the dire need for food, shelter, non-food items, and medical assistance for the displaced families in both provinces. The recent floods have exacerbated the challenges faced by these communities, underscoring the importance of immediate and sustained aid to address the humanitarian crisis.

The government’s findings call for a coordinated response from both national and international aid organizations to mitigate the impact of the floods and provide essential support to the affected families. As the situation develops, the need for comprehensive relief efforts remains critical to help these communities recover and rebuild.

The plight of displaced families in Abyan and Taiz serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of conflict-affected populations to natural disasters. It underscores the importance of enhancing disaster preparedness and response mechanisms to protect and support the most vulnerable communities.
