Gold Prices Drop Below $4,050 as Dollar Gains Strength
Gold prices fell on Friday, dropping below the $4,050 per ounce mark as the U.S. dollar regained some of its strength. This shift reduced the appeal of the precious metal for investors, despite gold maintaining a weekly gain of over 5 percent, supported by declining U.S. Treasury yields and changing expectations regarding U.S. fiscal policy.
In spot trading, gold decreased by 1 percent to $4,048.97 per ounce. Meanwhile, U.S. gold futures dropped by 1.4 percent, reaching $4,057.95 per ounce.
Other Precious Metals Experience Declines
Other precious metals also saw price declines. Silver fell by 0.5 percent to $51.52 per ounce, while platinum decreased by 0.6 percent to $1,510.78. Additionally, spot palladium dropped by 0.9 percent to $1,025.70 per ounce.
The U.S. dollar index rose by 0.2 percent to 101.80 points. Throughout the week, gold benefited from lower Treasury yields and increased demand for safe-haven assets.
Market Pressures and Investor Behavior
Analysts noted that gold remains under pressure from liquidity concerns stemming from stock market declines. Some investors are selling their gold holdings to cover losses or meet margin requirements in other investments.
Analysts from ANZ Bank highlighted the continued strong demand for gold. They reported that central banks added a net total of 321 tons to their reserves during the third quarter, marking the fastest pace of buying since late 2024. This surge in demand is driven by geopolitical risks and concerns regarding fiscal discipline.
Upcoming Economic Indicators
Investors are awaiting the release of the U.S. non-farm payroll report later today, seeking new indicators regarding the strength of the U.S. economy and the trajectory of interest rates.
In related news, Goldman Sachs has revised its gold price forecast for the end of 2026, lowering it from $4,650 to $4,150 per ounce. The bank cited the Federal Reserve’s adoption of a more hawkish stance on interest rates.
