On Saturday, 15 Yemeni fishermen arrived in the city of Al-Khawkhah, located in the southern part of Al-Hudaydah Governorate. Their return follows a release by Eritrean authorities after nearly three months of detention.
Local sources reported that the fishermen reached the Fish Landing Center in Al-Khawkhah after their release. They had been detained while fishing in the Red Sea’s territorial waters. The fishermen set sail from the coast of Al-Khawkhah on April 12, but communication with them ceased shortly thereafter. It later emerged that they were held by Eritrean authorities.
The release of the fishermen resulted from mediation efforts by Yemeni fishing leaders. Their negotiations successfully secured the fishermen’s freedom, allowing them to return to their communities.
In recent years, incidents of Yemeni fishermen being detained in the Red Sea have increased. These incidents often involve repeated assaults on fishing boats, including detentions carried out by Eritrean authorities in various coastal nations. Such actions exacerbate the hardships faced by fishermen and threaten the livelihoods of thousands of coastal families.
This situation highlights the ongoing challenges in the region, where fishing remains a vital source of income for many. The community continues to advocate for the safety and rights of fishermen in these waters.
