Egypt’s Local Wheat Purchases Reach 3.3 Million Tons Amid Economic Strategies

Egypt’s Local Wheat Purchases Surge

The Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture has announced that the government has procured 3.3 million tons of local wheat since the onset of the supply season. This strategic increase is designed to strengthen reliance on domestic production, mitigate import costs, and ensure an uninterrupted supply of subsidized bread for over 69 million citizens.

Significant Growth Compared to Previous Years

Recent official data indicates a marked increase in local wheat supplies, highlighting a 17% rise compared to the same timeframe in 2025 and a 6% increase relative to 2024 levels. By this point in 2025, the government had collected 2.01 million tons, while the figure for 2024 stood at 2.22 million tons. These statistics reflect a positive trend in the performance of this crucial agricultural sector.

Higher Purchase Prices to Support Farmers

The government is acquiring local wheat at prices exceeding global market rates. This approach aims to bolster farmer income and maintain the stability of the subsidized bread system. Such measures underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing local production capabilities and reducing dependency on imports, thereby fortifying the national economy.

Through these initiatives, the Egyptian government seeks to address local wheat demands and enhance food security. Wheat, being a strategic crop, plays an essential role in ensuring food availability for citizens, particularly in light of ongoing economic challenges.
