Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, the Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, participated in the recent Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) meeting focused on “Protecting Energy Flows and Supplies and Supporting Global Development through International Cooperation.” His address underscored the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to both energy security and maritime protection.
In his address, Dr. Al-Wasil emphasized Saudi Arabia’s dedication to maintaining stability in global energy markets. He articulated that this commitment is essential for ensuring a continuous, efficient, and reliable flow of energy supplies. Such efforts not only contribute significantly to the global economy but also promote sustainable development. As a result, Saudi Arabia plays a pivotal role in fostering international cooperation aimed at ensuring energy sustainability.
Dr. Al-Wasil highlighted the critical importance of protecting maritime security and preserving freedom of navigation, particularly in key waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb. He remarked that these routes are foundational to global economic stability and the sustainability of international supply chains. Ensuring the security of these maritime pathways necessitates effective international coordination.
During the session, Dr. Al-Wasil condemned any attacks targeting energy infrastructure and civilian facilities, stressing that such assaults directly threaten maritime traffic and global supply chains. He called for heightened international coordination and strict adherence to international law to protect freedom of passage and ensure supply safety.
Furthermore, Dr. Al-Wasil referenced Bahrain’s Resolution 2817, which focuses on protecting navigation and freedom of passage in the Strait of Hormuz. This resolution garnered widespread support and signifies an important step towards enhancing regional security and stability. Initiatives such as this foster international collaboration and contribute to a safer environment for global trade.
Additionally, Dr. Al-Wasil stressed the necessity of providing reliable and affordable energy access to support sustainable development and reduce energy poverty, especially in developing countries. He advocated for a comprehensive approach that promotes cooperation and innovation while taking into account the unique national circumstances and development priorities of each nation.
