On Monday, Dr. Abdullah Al-Alimi, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council, welcomed UK Ambassador to Yemen, Abda Sharif. The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between the two nations and addressing recent developments in Yemen.
At the beginning of the meeting, Ambassador Sharif conveyed the UK government’s condolences following the passing of former President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi. She expressed her sympathy during this difficult time and praised the late president’s significant role in Yemen’s history.
The discussion covered various topics, including political, security, and economic developments. Dr. Al-Alimi highlighted the efforts of the Presidential Leadership Council and the government to stabilize conditions in liberated provinces. He emphasized the importance of strengthening state institutions to improve living conditions and alleviate humanitarian suffering, ultimately fostering a more stable environment for economic recovery.
Dr. Al-Alimi provided an overview of the situation in the temporary capital, Aden, and other liberated provinces. He discussed ongoing initiatives to enhance security and stability, improve public services, and address the challenges posed by the country’s exceptional circumstances.
The meeting also addressed maritime security updates and the role of the Coast Guard in safeguarding navigation, combating smuggling, and securing coastlines. Dr. Al-Alimi praised the UK’s support for Yemen’s maritime security sector, which bolsters the Coast Guard’s readiness and protects maritime routes.
Dr. Al-Alimi acknowledged the ongoing support from Saudi Arabia, which recently culminated in a $150 million agreement for fuel supplies through the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen. This initiative aims to operate over 70 electricity generation stations across various provinces, thereby enhancing electricity services and stabilizing vital sectors.
In response, Ambassador Sharif reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to collaborating with the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government. She emphasized the importance of supporting efforts to strengthen political, economic, and security stability while working with regional and international partners to promote peace.
