In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Major General Mohammed Al-Amir, the Deputy Minister of Interior for Security and Police, engaged with General Anthony Hayward, the military advisor to the UN envoy to Yemen, along with his accompanying delegation. The discussions centered around the latest security developments in Yemen and the Ministry of Interior’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety and stability across the region.
Major General Al-Amir highlighted the security forces’ notable successes in combating terrorism and organized crime. He reported that recent security operations have successfully dismantled several terrorist cells and thwarted plots aimed at destabilizing Aden. These achievements underscore the commitment of the security apparatus to maintain order and protect citizens from threats.
The Deputy Minister elaborated on comprehensive reforms and updates being implemented within the security and institutional framework. These initiatives aim to enhance the efficiency of security agencies and develop their professional and technical capabilities. By reinforcing institutional practices, the Ministry seeks to unify security decision-making processes and improve overall operational effectiveness.
Additionally, the Ministry is actively conducting ongoing training and rehabilitation programs for its personnel. This approach ensures that officers are well-prepared to fulfill their duties in accordance with the law, thereby supporting the state’s authority and reinforcing security and stability in Yemen.
Major General Al-Amir identified the Iranian-backed Houthi militias as the primary threat to security and stability in Yemen. He noted that this group engages in hostile actions and violations targeting civilians, while also threatening international navigation and regional security. Furthermore, he pointed out the collaboration between the Houthi militias and terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS. The security forces possess indicators and evidence illustrating the nature of this relationship and continue their efforts to pursue terrorist elements and cut off their funding sources.
The Deputy Minister urged the international community and the United Nations to exert more pressure on the Houthi militias to cease their destabilizing activities. He emphasized the need for a serious commitment to peace efforts and the agreed-upon frameworks. In response, General Anthony Hayward reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to monitoring security developments in Yemen. He expressed ongoing support for peace initiatives aimed at achieving comprehensive political solutions that promote security and alleviate humanitarian suffering.
