In a recent incident that underscores the ongoing human rights violations perpetrated by Houthi militias, the group detonated and set fire to the residence of Colonel Fadl Al-Saidi, a former officer in the Yemeni army. Colonel Al-Saidi has been held captive in Houthi prisons since 2018. The attack took place in the Shumlan neighborhood, located to the north of the capital city, Sana’a, as reported by local sources.
According to sources, armed units from the militia, under the direction of one of their supervisors, stormed Colonel Al-Saidi’s home before igniting it and detonating explosives. This assault resulted in the complete destruction of the building. The area was heavily secured by militia forces, escalating tensions among local residents who witnessed the event unfold.
Colonel Fadl Al-Saidi has been in Houthi custody since 2018 due to a conflict stemming from the militia’s attempts to seize his property and confiscate his home. This dispute led to violent clashes at the time, resulting in casualties and raising significant concerns within the local community.
Activists have circulated videos on social media showing rising smoke and the sounds of explosions, alongside the presence of military vehicles and armed Houthis around the house during the attack. This incident reflects a growing atmosphere of fear and anxiety among the residents of Shumlan, who have faced repeated assaults on their properties.
This attack follows a recent ruling by a Houthi-controlled court in western Sana’a, which sentenced Colonel Al-Saidi to death. This verdict has sparked widespread controversy in both human rights and political circles. Critics accuse the Houthis of weaponizing the judiciary to eliminate their opponents and seize their assets, further illustrating the nature of the violations committed by this group.
