On Thursday, Tariq Saleh, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council, engaged in discussions with U.S. Special Envoy to Yemen, Tim Lenderking. The two addressed the current situation in Yemen, regional developments, and shared strategies to combat Houthi terrorism.
During their meeting, Tariq Saleh presented the Presidential Leadership Council’s vision for resolving the ongoing crisis. He highlighted the humanitarian and economic challenges facing Yemen and emphasized the critical need for international support for the government during this pivotal time. Saleh reaffirmed the unity among the Presidential Leadership Council, the government, and legislative and judicial authorities, reflecting the aspirations of Yemenis for a nation that serves its citizens and collaborates with the international community to uphold security, stability, and respect for the people’s sovereignty.
Saleh stressed that negotiating peace with the Houthi militia is a futile endeavor. He argued that confronting the militia with strength is essential for achieving lasting peace. Furthermore, he urged the international community to recognize the Iranian threat in Yemen, which endangers both Yemeni and global interests. This acknowledgment is crucial, especially since the international community has often viewed the Houthis as a negotiable party.
In response, U.S. Envoy Tim Lenderking reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to combating terrorism and continued support for the Presidential Leadership Council. He acknowledged that the Houthis represent the primary obstacle to peace in Yemen.
The meeting also included Jonathan Pecha, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Yemen, James Forsman, Yemen Desk Officer at the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, and Robert Cooper, Economic Officer at the U.S. Consulate.
This dialogue underscores the ongoing efforts to stabilize Yemen and address the serious challenges posed by Houthi terrorism, as well as the critical role of international cooperation in achieving these goals.
