Council member Lt. Gen. Sultan Al-Arada calls for collective efforts to protect antiquities and preserve cultural heritage.

Efforts to Protect Yemen's Cultural Heritage Emphasized by Leadership

Marib Governor Highlights Cultural Significance

Lieutenant General Sultan Al-Aradah, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council and Governor of Marib, underscored the necessity of collaborative efforts between official bodies and communities to safeguard Yemen’s archaeological sites. He emphasized that these sites represent an integral part of Yemen’s identity and hold global cultural significance.

During a meeting with Ahmed Baṭa’iy, the head of the General Authority for Antiquities and Museums, and Ali Al-Fatimi, the Marib Deputy Governor, Al-Aradah discussed the potential for archaeological sites and museums to become vital economic resources. He stressed the importance of developing a strategic plan to protect Yemen’s cultural heritage and raise community awareness about its value.

Implementation of Protective Measures

Al-Aradah praised the outcomes of the first consultative meeting on cultural heritage protection, organized by the authority in Marib last October. He called for the implementation of these outcomes to enhance the protection of archaeological sites from deterioration and vandalism.

He directed local authorities in Marib to coordinate with the General Authority to establish protective measures for key sites, including the Temple of Uwais, the Temple of Baran, the Marib Dam, and the ancient city of Marib. The latter recently received recognition from UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Al-Aradah also highlighted the need to finalize construction at the provincial museum to properly display and preserve artifacts.

Collaboration Acknowledged by Antiquities Authority

Ahmed Baṭa’iy, head of the General Authority for Antiquities, expressed appreciation for Al-Aradah’s support and the cooperation from local authorities in Marib. He reviewed the outcomes of the consultative meeting held last October, noting its role in enhancing the capabilities of local personnel and encouraging their active participation in protecting archaeological sites.

Baṭa’iy emphasized the importance of such meetings in promoting community engagement. He encouraged citizens and researchers to organize tours to explore Yemen’s rich civilizations, thereby fostering a deeper appreciation for the country’s cultural heritage.

The concerted efforts to protect Yemen’s archaeological treasures reflect a commitment to preserving the country’s cultural identity. By fostering collaboration and strategic planning, local leaders aim to ensure that Yemen’s historical sites are maintained for future generations, while also promoting tourism and economic development.
