Council member Aidarus al-Zubaidi meets with the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires.

Meeting Between Yemeni Leadership and U.S. Acting Ambassador

On Sunday, October 1, 2023, Major General Aidarus al-Zubaidi, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council, met with Jonathan Pecha, the Acting U.S. Ambassador to Yemen. This meeting focused on the current political and humanitarian situation in Yemen amidst ongoing economic challenges.

Addressing Humanitarian Needs

During the discussion, both leaders highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis resulting from the economic downturn. Al-Zubaidi emphasized the urgent need for regional and international support to assist the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government. He called for enhanced efforts to provide essential services to citizens, support developmental projects, and strengthen financial and service institutions.

Importance of International Support

Al-Zubaidi stressed the importance of intensifying international efforts to empower the Yemeni government. He noted that the government’s success in liberated areas plays a crucial role in stabilizing the country and paving the way for security and peace.

Military Developments and Threats

The meeting also addressed military developments, particularly the ongoing mobilization efforts by Houthi militias across various fronts. Al-Zubaidi pointed out the escalating military actions in contested areas and the serious human rights violations against civilians under Houthi control. He condemned the killings, arrests, and torture of innocent individuals, stating that these actions threaten peace prospects and exacerbate humanitarian suffering.

The Path to Peace

In this context, Al-Zubaidi asserted that achieving peace and stability in Yemen requires addressing the Houthi threat and finding equitable solutions to core conflict issues, including the southern issue. He called for support to help the country overcome the economic crisis caused by the Houthi war.

U.S. Commitment to Yemen

In response, Acting Ambassador Pecha reaffirmed the United States’ support for the Presidential Leadership Council. He expressed Washington’s commitment to restoring security and stability in Yemen and the broader region. Pecha noted that the U.S. closely monitors the situation on the ground and collaborates with regional and international partners to alleviate humanitarian suffering and build a just and lasting peace in Yemen.
