Control of the Ibrahimi Mosque stirs tensions in Hebron, escalating conflicts in the region.

Rising Tensions in Hebron’s Old City

Tensions are escalating in Hebron’s Old City as Israeli authorities intensify efforts to monopolize the management of the Ibrahimi Mosque. These actions include transferring planning and construction powers to Israeli entities, raising significant concerns among Palestinians while receiving support from settlers.

A Tense Reality Under Strict Restrictions

The Ibrahimi Mosque stands as a sensitive site, surrounded by approximately 40,000 Palestinians and around 200 settler families. However, these groups face separate movement and security regulations. Israeli forces impose checkpoints and patrol main streets, restricting non-resident Palestinians from freely entering the area.

Conflicting Perspectives on the Ibrahimi Mosque

Israeli settler Nitzan views the Old City and the Ibrahimi Mosque as a “sacred destination for all humanity.” In contrast, Palestinian activist Issa Amro perceives the site as a symbol of Israeli expansion in the city. Amro stated, “We live in a large prison, where checkpoints hinder our movement, and no one can access our homes.”

Over time, many Palestinian shops have closed, leaving once-vibrant streets deserted. Residents increasingly complain about settler attacks and soldier harassment, exacerbating their daily struggles.

Transfer of Ibrahimi Mosque Management to Israeli Authorities

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s announcement to transfer management and planning powers of the site to Israeli authorities marks a significant shift. This decision has heightened Palestinian fears of entrenching Israeli control over the Ibrahimi Mosque and its surroundings.

Amro provided video evidence showing settlers throwing stones at his home, asserting that they came “to seize the house.”

Summary of the Situation in the Old City

Today, Hebron’s Old City exists between two conflicting visions. On one side, settlers believe the area is “sacred” and support expanding Israeli control. On the other, Palestinians feel their lives are confined by barriers and closures, with increasing Israeli dominance threatening their existence in the region.
