Yemen’s Permanent Representative Discusses Current Developments with UN Envoy
Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi, met today with Hans Grundberg, the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Yemen. They discussed the latest political and military developments, as well as the economic and humanitarian situations in the country.
Focus on Countering Houthi Threats
Ambassador Al-Saadi emphasized that the struggle faced by Yemenis aims to prevent the continued threats posed by the Houthi terrorist militias to Yemen, the region, and the world. He noted that the militias have rejected peace initiatives and opted for military escalation. Furthermore, they have continued to target civilians, infrastructure, and civilian properties in Yemen and Saudi Arabia, jeopardizing regional security and international navigation in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Government’s Commitment to Peace Efforts
The ambassador pointed out that the Yemeni government has provided numerous opportunities for peace and de-escalation. However, the militias responded with increased mobilization and aggression, placing the state in a position of national and constitutional responsibility. He stressed that the government’s goal is to restore state institutions and assert its authority over all Yemeni territory and territorial waters, protect citizens, and end the situation where weapons and decisions of war and peace remain outside state control.
Political Path and Sustainable Peace
Regarding the political path, Al-Saadi affirmed that the government has never rejected the option of peace. However, experience has shown that temporary ceasefires without addressing the root causes of the conflict do not lead to sustainable peace. He stated that it is unacceptable for an armed militia to control state institutions and use Yemeni territory to threaten Yemenis, neighboring countries, and international navigation.
Vision for Political Settlement
Al-Saadi clarified that the desired political settlement should lead to a functional state and a just, comprehensive, and sustainable peace that restores state institutions, fulfills the aspirations of the Yemeni people, and ends the Houthi coup.
UN Envoy’s Assessment
For his part, Grundberg reviewed his assessment of the latest developments and the efforts made by his office, along with the prospects for the political process in light of current events.
Importance of Ongoing Communication
Both sides reiterated the importance of continuing communication and consultation regarding developments in Yemen and efforts to achieve sustainable peace and alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.
