On Thursday, Major General Sultan Al-Arada, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council and Governor of Marib, met with Anthony Hayward, the military advisor to the UN envoy to Yemen. They discussed the ongoing military developments and the escalating threats posed by Houthi militias, which significantly impact the United Nations’ efforts to establish peace in Yemen.
During the meeting in Marib, Major General Al-Arada reaffirmed the political and military leadership’s commitment to supporting the United Nations and all regional and international initiatives aimed at achieving a comprehensive and just peace in Yemen. He emphasized the need to fulfill the aspirations of the Yemeni people for security and stability. Al-Arada called for a reassessment by the international community and the UN regarding the Houthi militia, which now presents a direct threat to regional and international security, maritime navigation in the Red and Arabian Seas, and global trade routes. He pointed out that the militia’s actions align with Iranian agendas, disrupting shipping in crucial maritime passages.
Major General Al-Arada outlined various forms of escalation by the Houthi militia in their ongoing conflict against the Yemeni people. These escalations span military, economic, social, and ideological dimensions, including a systematic attack on national identity and an effort to undermine the values of the Yemeni populace.
He stressed the urgent need for the international community to take decisive political and economic measures to curb the destabilizing activities of the Houthi militia. Such actions should aim to dry up both internal and external sources of support for the militia.
Al-Arada also urged the international community to provide necessary support to the legitimate Yemeni government. This support would enable the government to regain control over the entire national territory, enforce law and order, and restore state institutions. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of assisting the government in addressing the severe economic and humanitarian crises caused by the Houthi militia, working to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.
In response, UN advisor Anthony Hayward reiterated the international community’s commitment to achieving security and stability in Yemen. He expressed the UN’s dedication to supporting the legitimate Yemeni government and facilitating peace efforts. Hayward emphasized the need for all parties to adhere to their commitments across various domains to ensure a successful peace process and mitigate the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
The ongoing discussions reflect a crucial moment for Yemen as leaders seek to navigate complex challenges and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
