Yemen's Fishing Port Rehabilitation Project Moves Forward

Aden’s Fishing Port to Receive a Major Facelift

In a significant development for Yemen’s fishing industry, Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries Minister, Major General Salem Al-Suqatri, engaged in pivotal discussions today in the temporary capital, Aden. Alongside Tom Trude, the representative from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Yemen, they reviewed the progress and implementation strategies of the fishing port rehabilitation project in Aden’s Al-Tawahi district. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development through the German Development Bank, the initiative commands a budget of $35 million.

Project Insights and Economic Implications

During the meeting, which also saw the attendance of the Deputy Minister for Fish Production and Marketing, Ghazi Lahmar, and the President of the General Authority for Fisheries in the Gulf of Aden, Dr. Abdul Salam Ahmed, Minister Al-Suqatri received comprehensive updates. The discussions covered the construction progress within the fishing sector, including the rehabilitation stages of the port and related infrastructure developments like the administrative building and other port facilities. The project’s significance in bolstering the port’s capacity to support the national economy was a key focus.

Expanding the Scope: Development of Fisheries in the Region

The dialogue extended to the achievements of the broader fishery development project in the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, and the Red Sea. Implemented by the UNDP and its local partners, and financed by the World Bank, this project aims to meet the local community’s needs and address fishermen’s challenges. It includes the rehabilitation of several fish landing centers in Aden, Hadramout, Mahra, and Taiz provinces, enhancing fishermen’s capabilities and operational efficiency.

A Call for Completion and Continuous Support

Minister Al-Suqatri emphasized the importance of completing the restoration work in line with the ministry’s plans, underscoring the commitment to safeguarding and supporting economic and developmental facilities to boost the national economy. He urged for the project phases to be executed diligently, according to the prepared schedules. The Minister also expressed gratitude for the continuous support from the Federal Republic of Germany, the World Bank, and other donors, highlighting their instrumental role in the ongoing support for Yemen.

This initiative represents a significant step towards revitalizing Yemen’s fishing industry, promising enhanced economic prospects and community benefits.
