Aden Governor Signs Sewage Project Deal with UNHCR

In a significant development aimed at enhancing the infrastructure of Aden, Ahmed Lamlas, the Minister of State and Governor of Aden, signed an official contract today, Thursday, with Mohammad Rafiq Nasri, the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office, for a sewage infrastructure project. The initiative is funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) alongside the local authority of the governorate.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $5,857,500, with $2.1 million financed by the UNHCR and the remaining $3,757,500 covered by the local authority of Aden. The project aims to provide safe and reliable sewage services to vulnerable groups, including refugees, internally displaced persons, returnees, and hosting communities in Aden. This will be achieved through the rehabilitation and expansion of the existing sewage network, significantly reducing environmental pollution and enhancing public health in the area.

Approximately 1.5 million people are expected to benefit from the project by 2026, significantly improving the quality of life and health conditions in the targeted areas of Dar Saad, Sheikh Othman, and Al Mansoura.

Following the signing, Lamlas emphasized the importance of promptly initiating the project on the ground and adhering to the agreed specifications and standards. He highlighted the project’s crucial role in protecting groundwater from contamination due to sewage leakage, stating that it represents a foundational step towards alleviating pressure on the Al Haswa station, accommodating urban expansion, and preventing the discharge into the sea.

This collaboration marks a pivotal step towards improving the infrastructure and living conditions in Aden, reflecting the commitment of both local and international entities to address critical environmental and health challenges in the region.
