A trader exposes judicial violations in Sana’a, currently under Houthi control.

Yemeni Merchant Accuses Houthi-Controlled Judiciary of Legal Violations

A Yemeni merchant, Ali Adnan Al-Sha’sani, has accused the judiciary under Houthi control in Sana’a of engaging in a series of legal violations against him. He described the ongoing commercial dispute as “personal and fabricated.”

Allegations of Judicial Manipulation

In a video posted on his Facebook page, Al-Sha’sani claimed that his rival, Mohammed Ahmed Abdullah Hamid, exploited his influence within the judicial system to initiate a fabricated case against him. This action followed Al-Sha’sani’s refusal to testify against a trader from Taiz. He pointed out significant inconsistencies in his opponent’s account regarding the disputed amount.

Unjust Sentencing and Lack of Due Process

Al-Sha’sani revealed that a court sentenced him to six years in prison and imposed a fine of half a billion Yemeni rials after only four hearings. He criticized the court for ignoring the documents and witnesses he presented, which he viewed as evidence of a lack of justice and the politicization of the judiciary.

Unlawful Case Transfers

According to Al-Sha’sani, the case was unlawfully transferred from the Anti-Corruption Authority to the Public Prosecution for Financial Crimes and then to the Military Judiciary. He emphasized that he does not hold any governmental or military position, raising questions about the legitimacy of these transfers.

Claims of Corruption Among Judges

The merchant asserted that his treatment within the judicial system was retaliatory. He disclosed evidence suggesting that one of the judges received monthly payments from his rival through a money exchange company.

Call for Legal and Human Rights Action

Al-Sha’sani concluded by warning against the dangers of using the judiciary to settle personal disputes. He urged for legal and human rights interventions to restore justice and protect the rights of litigants.
