A scientific seminar on combating antimicrobial resistance has commenced in Aden.

First Scientific Seminar on Antimicrobial Resistance Kicks Off in Aden

Aden, Yemen – Today, the first scientific seminar aimed at combating antimicrobial resistance commenced in Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen. The event is organized by the Antimicrobial Resistance Program under the Ministry of Public Health and Population, in collaboration with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) from France.

Seminar Focus and Participation

The seminar gathers approximately 300 participants, including doctors, pharmacists, academics, and representatives from relevant sectors. Over the next two days, attendees will discuss various topics related to the functioning of the Antimicrobial Resistance Program, strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance in Yemen, and the program’s future vision.

Key discussions will address the One Health approach to antimicrobial resistance, assessment and management of antimicrobial use, animal health, the impact of climate change on resistance, and lessons learned from clinical practices. Additionally, the seminar will explore multi-disciplinary strategies and Médecins Sans Frontières’ approach to antimicrobial resistance in conflict areas, emphasizing responsible antibiotic consumption.

Opening Remarks from Health Officials

During the opening of the seminar, Dr. Qassem Mohammed Baheeb, Minister of Public Health and Population, highlighted the importance of seizing opportunities to develop a robust antimicrobial resistance program. He stressed the need for an institutional framework that engages various sectors in line with the One Health concept. Dr. Baheeb also underscored the significance of adhering to the ministry’s established plan.

He called for enhanced awareness campaigns that target all community segments and encouraged the seminar to adopt practical outcomes for future implementation.

Government Commitment to Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy

Dr. Ali Ahmed Al-Walidi, Deputy Minister of Primary Health Care, presented the ministry’s strategy for addressing antimicrobial resistance, asserting Yemen’s position as a pioneer in the region. He emphasized the government’s technical, political, and administrative commitment to tackling this pressing issue, stating that the ministry collaborates with all relevant sectors under the One Health approach.

Importance of the Seminar

Dr. Munia Al-Khodairi, the national focal point for the Antimicrobial Resistance Program, emphasized the seminar’s role in highlighting antimicrobial resistance as a significant threat to modern medicine and a global existential risk. She urged collective efforts to unify visions for developing suitable solutions, enhancing preventive programs, and raising community awareness about the responsible use of antibiotics.

Collaboration with Médecins Sans Frontières

Dr. Hani Al-Mulahi, Deputy Head of the Médecins Sans Frontières mission in Yemen, reaffirmed the importance of strengthening coordination between the ministry and the organization. He emphasized that such collaboration aims to deliver essential healthcare services to those in need.

This seminar marks a significant step forward in Yemen’s fight against antimicrobial resistance, bringing together key stakeholders to share insights, strategies, and solutions to this critical health challenge.
