Emergency Health Committee Discusses Polio Situation in Yemen

The High Emergency Health Committee convened today, Wednesday, in the temporary capital of Aden. The meeting, led by Minister of Public Health and Population Dr. Qassem Bahibeh, focused on the current epidemiological situation regarding polio cases across various provinces.

Key Discussions on Polio Transmission and Prevention

During the meeting, the committee team from the Ministry of Health collaborated with experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. Dr. Ali Ahmed Al-Walidi, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health for Primary Health Care, also attended. The discussions centered on the transmission methods of polio viruses and the most effective strategies to combat their spread. The committee emphasized the importance of achieving high immunization rates among targeted children and addressing existing gaps in coverage.

Minister Highlights the Need for Community Awareness

Minister Bahibeh stressed the critical role of raising community health awareness to ensure effective protection against polio cases. He noted that the ministry, along with its partners, is implementing several measures aimed at addressing the challenges posed by the spread of epidemic diseases, particularly polio. The situation is particularly concerning in areas controlled by the Houthi militia, where the risk to liberated regions increases.

Call for Collaborative Efforts in Immunization

The minister urged for a concerted effort between the ministry and its partners to achieve high immunization rates. This can be accomplished through routine vaccinations and targeted immunization campaigns in high-risk areas. He highlighted the necessity of addressing coverage gaps to mitigate any potential threats.

Strengthening Community Engagement and Comprehensive Planning

Minister Bahibeh emphasized the importance of enhancing community awareness campaigns and fostering effective community partnerships. He pointed out the need to analyze the current situation and its challenges, focusing on vulnerable areas. A comprehensive and integrated plan should be developed to strengthen protection against polio and other diseases.

In conclusion, the meeting underscored the urgent need for a united front in combating polio and ensuring the health and safety of children across Yemen.
