A meeting chaired by the Taiz governor discusses urgent measures to ensure water supply and alleviate citizens’ suffering.

Urgent Meeting Addresses Water Crisis in Taiz

In a crucial meeting today, the Board of Directors of the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation in Taiz, led by Governor Nabil Shamsan, discussed immediate solutions to the ongoing water crisis. The meeting aimed to identify effective measures to provide water to citizens and alleviate their suffering.

Overview of the Current Situation

The meeting included key officials such as the Deputy Governor for Services, Engineer Rashad Al-Akhali, and directors from various departments, including Water, Rural Water, Industry and Trade, Transport, Planning and International Cooperation, Finance, Traffic, Police Management, and city district managers. They reviewed reports on the current crisis and its underlying causes.

Emergency Measures Implemented

Deputy Governor Al-Akhali highlighted several urgent actions taken to address the crisis. These measures included supplying desalination stations with 500,000 liters of water and designating several wells to support these stations. Authorities are closely monitoring water distribution through local vendors, ensuring compliance to prevent exploitation of citizens’ needs. Additionally, security measures are in place to prevent manipulation and ensure the smooth operation of desalination efforts.

Unified Efforts Required

Governor Shamsan emphasized the need for all relevant parties to collaborate effectively. He called for a unified approach to manage the crisis and urged strict actions against those manipulating water prices, including well owners, desalination station operators, and water transporters.

Maximizing Water Resources

The governor stressed the importance of utilizing all available water resources. He proposed designating wells for desalination stations and bringing new wells into service, including the residential city well. He also highlighted the need to complete the supply line from the Al-Dabab wells, allocating four of these wells specifically for drinking water, and ensuring that it reaches citizens at regulated prices.

Coordinated Local Efforts

Governor Shamsan directed the managers of the Cairo, Al-Mudhaffar, and Sala districts to fully cooperate and utilize all financial and supervisory resources. He urged them to conduct field visits and coordinate with local leaders and police to monitor compliance and reduce the severity of the crisis. He noted that many proposed solutions are under serious consideration, aiming for a cohesive and effective response to restore normal water supply.

Collaborative Initiatives

During the meeting, Engineer Wathiq Al-Aghbari, Director of the Local Water Corporation, along with Abdul Rahman Al-Qala’a, Director of the Industry and Trade Office, and Captain Osama Al-Sharabi from the police, discussed joint efforts to allocate wells for desalination stations. They emphasized the importance of monitoring water distribution and regulating prices, confirming that a series of urgent measures and strict security protocols are in place to help mitigate the crisis and ease citizens’ hardships.

Partnership with UNICEF

In a related discussion, Governor Shamsan met with a UNICEF delegation to review the implementation of an agreement for operating and pumping water from the Al-Hubban fields to the corporation’s reservoirs. This agreement adheres to technical standards and stipulations.

Following a report from the water corporation’s director on the latest developments regarding water pumping from the Al-Hubban fields, the UNICEF delegation confirmed their ongoing efforts in coordination with the resident representative and humanitarian coordinator. They aim to initiate water pumping from the fields included in the agreement as a first phase, while continuing rehabilitation and maintenance work on wells in other fields. This initiative will facilitate their connection to the network, support repairs to the local water network within the city, and implement sanitation projects in several residential neighborhoods.
