A meeting held today in Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen, focused on accelerating the implementation of the strategic Socotra Port project. Led by Minister of Transport Dr. Abdul Salam Hamid, the meeting emphasized the project’s significance, which is funded by the Kuwaiti Fund for Development at a cost of $50 million.
The meeting included several key figures, such as Deputy Minister of Transport Nasser Sharif, Captain Ali Al-Sobhi, the Ministry’s Maritime Affairs and Ports Sector Undersecretary, and Engineer Wazira Al-Sharmani, Undersecretary for Planning and International Cooperation. Additionally, Engineer Salem Basmeir, Chairman of the Arab Sea Ports Authority, and Engineer Ali Barahim, Director of the Socotra Port Project Executive Unit, contributed to the discussions.
Participants addressed the necessary steps to complete the port project, ensuring compliance with the requirements set by the Kuwaiti Fund for Development. They discussed the procedures and phases required for effective project execution.
The meeting underscored the need to submit the required documents to the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation. This submission will allow for review and presentation to the Kuwaiti Fund, facilitating the approval of upcoming implementation steps.
Minister Hamid highlighted the strategic importance of the Socotra Port, noting its vital location in the Arabian Sea. He emphasized that the port will positively impact trade and the national economy. The minister urged all parties to initiate the project promptly, overcoming any obstacles to ensure the successful execution of the port, which was inaugurated by Presidential Leadership Council member Major General Aidarus Al-Zubaidi in March of this year.
Minister Hamid directed the Arab Sea Ports Authority and the Socotra Port Project Executive Unit to expedite the preparation of documents related to designs and studies. He called for the selection of a consulting firm for the project by forming a joint team from both sides. This team will work swiftly to finalize arrangements for completing the studies necessary for selecting the consulting company and preparing oversight-related documents.
The meeting in Aden marks a significant step toward advancing the Socotra Port project, which promises to enhance Yemen’s economic landscape. With a clear focus on collaboration and timely action, stakeholders aim to ensure the project’s success and its positive impact on the region.
