A human rights center calls for an urgent investigation into the death of an inmate at a Houthi prison in Saada.

Urgent Call for Investigation into Prisoner Death in Yemen

The American Center for Justice (ACJ) has called for an immediate and impartial investigation into the death of a prisoner at a facility controlled by the Houthi militia in Saada province, northern Yemen.

Condemnation of Mysterious Death

In a statement reviewed by Yemen Youth Net, the ACJ condemned the death of prisoner Rabi Ali Hussein Abu Mashaf under suspicious circumstances at the Qahza prison, located north of Saada city. The organization expressed deep concern over the incident, which raises serious questions about the treatment of detainees in Houthi-controlled facilities.

Details Surrounding the Incident

According to preliminary field reports, authorities discovered the prisoner hanging in the prison’s restroom at 3:00 AM on Saturday. Alarmingly, no independent or transparent investigation has taken place following this discovery. The prison administration has refused to look into the matter, and the prison official, known as Abu Hani, ordered the immediate burial of the body and the closure of the case. This raises significant fears regarding the circumstances of the incident and whether the victim suffered torture or extrajudicial execution.

Violations of Human Rights

The ACJ highlighted that this arbitrary behavior and cover-up represent a severe violation of the right to life. It also breaches Yemeni law and international treaties, including the Convention Against Torture and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both of which prohibit all forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment in detention centers.

Call for International Accountability

In conclusion, the ACJ urged for an urgent and fair international investigation into this incident. The organization emphasized the need to hold accountable those responsible for any violations or crimes. Furthermore, it called for an end to killings and torture in illegal detention centers operated by Houthi militias.

This tragic event underscores the ongoing human rights crisis in Yemen and the urgent need for accountability and reform in the country’s detention practices.
