A joint meeting took place today in the temporary capital of Aden, involving the Ministers of Transport, Planning and International Cooperation, and Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries. The meeting focused on ways to expedite the completion of necessary procedures and initiate the implementation of the Qarma Port project in Socotra Archipelago and the Broom Port project in Hadhramaut.
The meeting reviewed updated procedures agreed upon in previous meetings dedicated to the two projects. These procedures include updating the basic data for their components, completing technical and engineering services and consultations, and reviewing studies and designs. Additionally, the meeting addressed updating the estimated costs and the proposed timeline for implementation.
The Minister of Transport emphasized the importance of accelerating the completion of executive procedures and starting the projects as soon as possible. He noted that these projects hold strategic significance for enhancing maritime and commercial transport in Socotra and Hadhramaut. He stressed the need to fulfill previously modified requirements to ensure a smooth transition to the implementation phase and to benefit from the allocated funding for the projects.
The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation highlighted the importance of the two projects in supporting the transport sector, improving services, and enhancing economic infrastructure in Socotra and Hadhramaut. He explained that the ministry would present the projects as priority initiatives during side meetings with donors at the upcoming annual meetings of the World Bank, scheduled to take place in Bangkok, Thailand. The goal is to mobilize the necessary funding and complete the associated work and procedures.
The Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries stated that the establishment of Qarma and Broom ports would support fishing activities and the economy, improving services for fishermen and coastal communities in Socotra and Hadhramaut. He also noted that these projects would bolster investment and enhance local resources in the two governorates. He emphasized the importance of coordination and integration among relevant authorities to complete the technical and executive requirements for the projects, thereby expediting the implementation process according to approved specifications and standards.
The attendees agreed to intensify the efforts of the technical committee, which includes the relevant authorities for the projects. This committee will work to complete the remaining requirements, studies, and technical and financial documents while adhering to the specified pathways for their completion. This approach aims to accelerate the bidding and implementation processes and achieve the desired developmental and economic goals, paving the way for submitting the files to the Tender Committee to finalize the bidding procedures in accordance with applicable regulations and laws.
