Tragic Incident in Al Hudaydah: Civilian Killed by Houthi Landmine

On Friday, a civilian lost his life, and another sustained injuries due to the explosion of a Houthi anti-vehicle landmine in southern Al Hudaydah province. This tragic event highlights the ongoing dangers posed by landmines in Yemen.

Details of the Incident

According to the Yemen Mine Action Center, the deceased, identified as Abdul Karim Abbas, died after a landmine detonated under a truck. The explosion occurred on a secondary road in the village of Al-Suwaidiah, located in the Al Khawkhah district. The truck was reportedly transporting agricultural products when the incident took place.

Rising Casualties from Landmines

This incident is part of a broader crisis, as the number of casualties from landmines continues to rise. Over the past decade, the Houthi militia has planted thousands of landmines across several Yemeni provinces. The Yemeni government estimates that the militia has laid more than two million landmines since its takeover in September 2014. This figure represents one of the largest landmine campaigns since World War II.

Efforts to Clear Landmines

In response to the landmine crisis, the demining organization Masam announced last month that it has removed and destroyed nearly half a million landmines and explosive devices in Yemen since its operations began in 2018. These efforts aim to mitigate the risks posed to civilians and restore safety in affected areas.

The ongoing threat of landmines in Yemen underscores the urgent need for continued demining efforts and support for affected communities. As the situation evolves, it remains crucial for international organizations and local authorities to work together to address this humanitarian crisis.
