The Sudanese Security and Defense Council discusses recent developments in the political situation.

Sudan’s Security and Defense Council Addresses Political Developments

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, led a crucial meeting of Sudan’s Security and Defense Council. The council reviewed the current security and political situation in the country. This meeting occurred during a critical period as ongoing challenges continue to affect Sudan’s stability.

Discussion on Peace Process Developments

During the meeting, the council examined a proposal from mediating countries regarding the peace process in Sudan. The council expressed appreciation for these nations’ efforts and reaffirmed its commitment to a steadfast position on the peace initiative. Additionally, the council indicated that it is preparing a consensus response to the American proposal, as reported by the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA).

Denial of Negotiation Leaks

In a move to enhance transparency, the council denied the accuracy of information circulating on social media about the content of the proposal or the negotiation process. The council emphasized that these leaks do not reflect reality and warned all parties against disseminating information that could jeopardize national security or negatively impact future peace efforts.

Welcoming Future Initiatives

The council reiterated its openness to any initiatives that align with the aspirations of the Sudanese people. It stressed the importance of maintaining the country’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. These statements reflect a strong desire to achieve peace and stability in Sudan amid the current circumstances.

Ongoing Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis

These developments come as the conflict that erupted on April 15, 2023, between the army led by al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti) continues. This ongoing violence has severely deteriorated health and living conditions, exacerbating the internal and external displacement crisis. Despite the efforts of Arab, African, and international mediators, peace has yet to be restored.
