Minister Signs Agreements to Enhance Water and Sanitation Services

In a significant initiative aimed at improving water and sanitation services in Yemen, Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, signed two agreements today in Aden, the country’s temporary capital. These agreements are part of the “Ghaith Al-Sumood” Phase III project and involve collaboration with the organization Samaritan’s Purse to implement eight critical water and environmental sanitation projects across the governorates of Aden and Taiz.

Targeting Vulnerable Communities

The agreements will benefit approximately 180,000 individuals in both governorates, focusing on enhancing water supply and sanitation services. The projects aim to increase access to safe drinking water and reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases. Furthermore, they will improve water infrastructure in targeted areas while promoting hygiene practices and building the capacity of local communities to sustainably manage and operate water and sanitation facilities.

Projects in Taiz Governorate

The first agreement includes four water and environmental sanitation projects in the districts of Al-Waziyah and Al-Makha in Taiz. These initiatives will enhance access to safe drinking water by establishing solar-powered wells, developing water distribution networks, rehabilitating water tanks, and improving operational and maintenance facilities. Additionally, the projects will upgrade sanitation facilities and promote hygiene practices, ultimately enhancing health outcomes and economic well-being for vulnerable populations affected by water scarcity.

Projects in Aden Governorate

The second agreement encompasses four water and environmental sanitation projects in the districts of Dar Saad and Al-Buraiqa in Aden. This includes the rehabilitation of wells and water networks, construction and expansion of distribution tanks, and enhancement of water sources in the Bir Ahmad field. Moreover, the projects aim to establish sanitation facilities and promote community hygiene activities.

Training and Community Engagement

Both agreements will also include training programs for water committees and community health volunteers, along with the implementation of health awareness initiatives. These efforts are designed to improve water resource management and enhance services for residents.

Commitment to Infrastructure Improvement

Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized that signing these agreements reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to providing essential water and sanitation services in priority areas, particularly those hosting large numbers of displaced individuals. He reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to improving service infrastructure and fostering effective partnerships with international organizations.
