Heavy rains flood tents of displaced people in Gaza, with international organizations warning of an impending health disaster.

Severe Flooding Threatens Displaced Families in Gaza

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has issued a dire warning regarding the plight of hundreds of thousands of displaced individuals in Gaza. Heavy rainfall poses a significant risk of flooding to tents and shelters, especially as essential supplies, including basic shelter materials and sandbags, remain blocked from entry.

Rainfall Causes Tragedy and Destruction

According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, torrential rains swept through the region on Thursday, leading to the inundation of tents housing displaced families. Tragically, a baby succumbed to the extreme cold, while the Gaza government reported that 12 individuals either died or went missing. Additionally, 13 buildings collapsed, and 27,000 tents became submerged.

Humanitarian Conditions Deteriorate

  • Approximately 795,000 displaced persons face the threat of flooding in low-lying areas filled with debris.
  • A lack of sanitation and waste management increases the risk of disease outbreaks.
  • Previous supplies of waterproof tents and thermal blankets proved insufficient to combat the flooding.
  • There is an urgent need for 300,000 new tents to accommodate around 1.5 million displaced individuals.

Health Risks Escalate

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that over 4,000 people reside in high-risk coastal areas. The organization warns of potential contamination and the absence of proper sewage systems, which could exacerbate health issues.

Personal Accounts from Displaced Families

In the Al-Nuseirat camp, displaced individuals shared their struggles with soaked mattresses and clothing. They reported a severe lack of food and clean water, highlighting the harsh living conditions they endure.

The situation in Gaza remains critical, with international organizations urging immediate action to prevent further humanitarian crises.
