A technical report indicates that using the zoom and continuous navigation features within the Google Maps application significantly increases internet data consumption. This increase occurs due to the constant need to download new information and maps from the company’s servers.
The report explains that the application loads additional data each time a user zooms in or out or moves between locations. It also consumes data when displaying satellite images and information related to places, restaurants, traffic, and real-time navigation.
Furthermore, the report highlights that Google Maps relies on 23 different zoom levels, requiring continuous loading of new map sections when changing the display level or moving within the map.
Intensive use of the application, especially during navigation and while displaying traffic and real-time data, may lead to data consumption exceeding 200 megabytes per hour.
Experts advise users, particularly those with limited internet plans, to download maps in advance via Wi-Fi and use them offline. They also recommend disabling satellite view when not needed to help reduce data consumption.
