Yemen’s government welcomes the UN envoy’s announcement

Yemen Welcomes UN Envoy's Initiative for Relief

In response to the severe humanitarian conditions faced by the Yemeni population, particularly in areas forcibly controlled by the Houthi terrorist militias, the Yemeni government has welcomed the recent announcement by the United Nations Special Envoy. This announcement includes the revocation of the latest decisions against several banks and the banking sector, the resumption of flights through Sana’a International Airport, and the facilitation of travel to other destinations as needed. This move aligns with the government’s commitment to implementing comprehensive economic and banking reforms flexibly, responding to the national business community’s plea, and acknowledging the efforts of international, regional, and UN mediation.

The Yemeni government views this initiative as a step towards alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people. It hopes that the declared agreement will create favorable conditions for constructive dialogue aimed at ending all destructive Houthi practices against the banking sector, the economy, and the national currency. It also anticipates fulfilling the commitments outlined in the roadmap, primarily the resumption of oil exports.

The government appreciates the commendable efforts led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to reach this agreement, reinforcing their principled commitment and steadfast positions in support of the Yemeni people through various stages and circumstances.

The government asserts that its economic reforms aim to protect the state’s legal status, empower the Central Bank of Yemen with its exclusive rights in managing monetary policy, safeguard the banking sector and depositors, and mitigate the catastrophic impact of halted oil exports on the national currency and the most vulnerable groups across the nation.

Furthermore, the government emphasizes its commitment to ensuring that the Yemeni people, especially those in areas under the Houthi militias’ control, do not face additional living burdens due to the militias’ unilateral policies. It aims to enable their travel, which is critically needed by thousands of sick individuals, job seekers, and students, to alleviate the war’s impact ignited by the militias with support from the Iranian regime over the past decade.

In this context, the government calls on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities by continuing to pressure the Houthi militias to prioritize the Yemeni people’s interests over those of their supporters, preventing Yemen and its people from being dragged from one war to another. Instead, it urges the initiation of peace efforts led by Saudi Arabia to launch a comprehensive political process that meets all Yemenis’ aspirations in restoring state institutions, security, stability, and development, according to nationally, regionally, and internationally agreed references.
