The Republic of Yemen, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, participated today via video conference in the preparatory meeting for the 38th Regional Technical Consultation of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Key Discussions on Agricultural Issues
Over the next two days, member countries of the FAO will discuss various agricultural and food-related issues affecting the Near East and North Africa region. This meeting aims to address critical challenges and develop strategies to enhance food security.
Challenges Facing Yemen’s Agricultural Sector
During the meeting, the ministry’s team, which included Deputy Minister of Irrigation Ahmed Al-Zamki and Deputy Minister of Agricultural Production Abdulmalik Naji, highlighted significant challenges facing Yemen’s agricultural sector. They pointed out issues such as climate change, water scarcity, and land degradation, alongside the economic, social, and security impacts these challenges pose.
Collaborative Efforts for Agricultural Development
The team emphasized that the ministry is actively working with partners to implement programs that enhance local agricultural production. These initiatives focus on supporting small farmers, developing modern irrigation systems, and improving agricultural value chains.
A Call for Tailored Support
The ministry expressed its hope that the meeting will lead to the formulation of practical programs that consider the unique circumstances of fragile states like Yemen. Such programs would bolster Yemen’s resilience and contribute to achieving sustainable food security.
