Today, Yemen joined the International Conference on a World Without Hunger, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event, organized in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the African Union, and the Ethiopian federal government, received technical support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Yemen’s delegation was led by Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Salem Al-Saqtri.
Over the next three days, the conference will address various papers presented by leaders and experts. These discussions will center on the pressing challenges of hunger, food security, climate change, and the conflicts and crises that contribute to these issues.
During the opening session, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller, and African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki emphasized the need for international cooperation. They highlighted the alarming statistic that 733 million people worldwide currently suffer from hunger.
The speakers stressed the necessity of developing flexible strategies to transform agricultural and food systems. These strategies should aim to increase production, ensure food security, and gradually eliminate hunger. Moreover, they called for optimal resource utilization, addressing the impacts of climate change, combating food waste, and focusing on value chains for high-yield crops.
The opening session also featured the presence of Yahya Al-Iryani, the Chargé d’Affaires at the Yemeni Embassy in Ethiopia, and Dr. Khadr Atroosh, Head of the Technical Secretariat for Food Security.
This conference represents a significant step towards addressing global hunger and fostering collaboration among nations to combat this critical issue.
