Yemen Participates in the 71st Session of the UNCTAD in Geneva

Geneva Hosts Global Trade and Development Talks

The Republic of Yemen took an active role in the opening session of the 71st round of the Trade and Development Board (UNCTAD) held at the United Nations Palace in Geneva. The Yemeni delegation was led by the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Ali Majoor.

Focusing on Economic Development and Challenges

The session delved into several pivotal issues concerning global economic development, with a special emphasis on the challenges confronting developing countries amidst the current international economic climate. It aimed to foster dialogue among member states and exchange expertise on how to bolster economic growth and achieve global prosperity.

Yemen Highlights Climate Change and Economic Burdens

In his address, Dr. Majoor underscored the significance of addressing the challenges posed by climate change, which has had devastating impacts on Yemen. Floods have swept away entire villages, displacing over half a million people. These disasters threaten not only lives and property but also have far-reaching effects on the country’s economic infrastructure and agricultural sector. He called on the international community, especially the major industrial nations responsible for significant emissions, to intensify their efforts in supporting developing and less developed countries to adapt to these challenges and mitigate damages.

Furthermore, Majoor touched upon the growing debt burdens on many countries, stressing the necessity for practical solutions to alleviate these burdens, including debt restructuring and facilitating access to international financing.

Addressing Security Concerns and Economic Cooperation

The ambassador also highlighted the severe impact of Houthi militia attacks on commercial shipping, which poses a significant threat to international navigation and exacerbates the suffering of the Yemeni people by driving up the prices of basic goods due to increased shipping costs.

Majoor reiterated Yemen’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with its international and regional partners to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, develop local capacities in trade and investment, and contribute to diversifying the economy and creating new job opportunities.

UNCTAD: A Platform for Global Economic and Developmental Issues

It’s worth noting that the Trade and Development Board is the principal organ of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), dedicated to discussing global economic and developmental issues and offering recommendations to promote trade and sustainable development.

The session was also attended by the Deputy Permanent Representative Dr. Hamid Omar and the First Secretary of the Embassy, Yahya Al-Rafeeq.

This participation underscores Yemen’s active engagement in global dialogues on trade and development, highlighting its dedication to addressing both the challenges and opportunities presented by the current international economic landscape.
