Yemen Participates in the Sixth Arab Water Forum in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Hosts Critical Discussions on Water Security

In a significant move to address water scarcity issues, the Republic of Yemen has actively participated in the Sixth Arab Water Forum, organized by the Arab Water Council in Abu Dhabi. The delegation, led by the Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, joined the forum to engage in vital discussions centered around water security and sustainability in the Arab region.

High-Level Dialogues on Water Security Challenges

The first day of the forum, sponsored by the League of Arab States, featured three high-level dialogues. These discussions focused on the impact of political instability on water security in the Arab region, addressing emerging regional water challenges, and securing sustainable financing for water projects and climate change initiatives.

Yemen’s Water Challenges and Government Efforts

Minister Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi presented an overview of Yemen’s water challenges and the government’s efforts to improve sustainable access to water. He emphasized that water scarcity poses an existential threat not only to Yemen but also to the entire Arab region, affecting energy, food sectors, and social security. Given Yemen’s nine-year struggle with war, these challenges are even more pressing.

The minister stressed the urgency of addressing water-related challenges, which are expected to intensify in the coming years due to growing demand and resource scarcity in the region. He pointed out that climate change and the anticipated increase in water demand necessitate further discussions, idea exchanges, and collaborative efforts to build future capacities capable of overcoming these challenges.

Focus on Water Scarcity and Sustainable Solutions

The three-day forum is dedicated to addressing water scarcity in the Arab world, the depletion of water resources, and exploring methods and means to produce water from sustainable sources. It aims to foster a collaborative environment where participants can share insights and strategies to tackle the pressing issue of water scarcity and ensure a sustainable water future for the region.

The participation of Yemen in the Sixth Arab Water Forum in Abu Dhabi underscores the country’s commitment to addressing critical water and environmental challenges, despite its ongoing conflicts. It represents a crucial step towards regional cooperation in the pursuit of sustainable water management solutions.
