Yemen Participates in the 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency

Delegation Led by Ambassador Haitham Shuja’ al-Din

Today, the Republic of Yemen participated in the 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Yemeni delegation was headed by Ambassador Haitham Shuja’ al-Din, who serves as Yemen’s permanent representative to the IAEA and ambassador to Austria.

Support for Cancer Treatment Initiatives

In his address to the conference, Ambassador Shuja’ al-Din expressed Yemen’s support for the IAEA’s initiatives in cancer treatment and technology. He highlighted the agency’s role in verifying and monitoring activities in Iran, particularly in light of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, adopted in 2015. The ambassador praised the IAEA’s assistance to Yemen’s healthcare sector, especially in cancer treatment. He also expressed hope for the IAEA team’s upcoming visit to the temporary capital, Aden, to establish a new cancer treatment center.

Condemnation of Houthi Attacks

Ambassador Shuja’ al-Din reiterated Yemen’s strong condemnation of the attacks carried out by Houthi militias, which receive full support from Iran. These assaults occur in Yemen’s territorial waters in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea. He emphasized that these actions solely benefit Iran and pose a threat to international navigation, global economy, and regional and international peace and security. The ambassador warned that such aggression harms global maritime trade and affects the people of the region and beyond.

Call for Reassessment of Houthi Threats

The ambassador stressed the importance of reassessing how the international community addresses the Houthi threat to maritime routes. He called for continued support for the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government. Furthermore, he urged ongoing efforts to find alternatives and necessary facilitation to ensure the execution of technical cooperation projects in conflict-affected countries, including Yemen. He emphasized that the IAEA should form a team from its policy-making secretariat to develop new policies that facilitate the implementation of technical cooperation projects in conflict-ridden nations.

Concern Over Ongoing Israeli Aggression

Ambassador Shuja’ al-Din also addressed the ongoing Israeli aggression against the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in Gaza, which has persisted for eleven months. This conflict has resulted in thousands of casualties amidst the international community’s silence regarding this humanitarian tragedy. He condemned threats made by an Israeli official regarding the potential use of a nuclear bomb in Gaza, calling for an immediate halt to this aggression and accountability for those responsible. He urged the international community to support the Palestinian people in achieving their legitimate rights and establishing their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Significance of the General Conference

The General Conference represents the highest policy-making body of the International Atomic Energy Agency, comprising representatives from all member states. This platform allows countries to collaborate on critical issues related to nuclear energy, safety, and security, fostering international cooperation.
