Dr. Qassem Baheeb, Yemen’s Minister of Public Health and Population, convened with representatives from the World Bank Group today in Geneva, Switzerland. This significant meeting aimed to explore avenues for enhancing collaboration and support for Yemen’s healthcare sector.

The discussions occurred during the 79th World Health Assembly, featuring notable participants such as Dr. Shereen Varkey, Director of Health, Nutrition, and Population Practices for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, along with Michael Kent, a health economics consultant at the World Bank. The meeting focused on reviewing existing collaborations fostered under previous World Bank projects, including initiatives related to health, nutrition, water, and sanitation in Yemen.

Achievements Amid Challenges

Throughout the discussions, participants underscored substantial achievements within Yemen’s health sector, despite the ongoing challenges the country faces. They identified critical future steps necessary to ensure the sustainability of the health system and to enhance its capacity to provide comprehensive and equitable health services to citizens across various provinces. The importance of increasing local participation in health service delivery was a focal point of the conversation. Furthermore, they addressed the need for alignment between the ongoing health reforms and the national strategy crafted by the Ministry of Health, which aims to improve institutional performance and the quality of health services accessible to the public.

Priorities for the Future

Minister Baheeb confirmed the mutual agreement on the priorities for the upcoming phase of collaboration. These priorities encompass support for the resilience and recovery of the health sector and the strengthening of primary healthcare services, which serve as the foundation of the overall health system. The discussions also emphasized ensuring sustainable health financing and building the capacity of health personnel in areas such as prevention, early detection, and management of non-communicable diseases.

The meeting was attended by key officials, including Dr. Ali Al-Walidi, Deputy Minister for Primary Healthcare, and Dr. Ahmed Al-Kamal, Deputy Minister for Planning. This collaboration represents a crucial step toward enhancing Yemen’s health infrastructure and ensuring that citizens receive the essential health services they require.
