Yemen Urges Action Against Iranian Arms Flow to Houthi Militias

The Republic of Yemen has emphasized the critical need to implement international resolutions aimed at halting the flow of Iranian weapons to Houthi militias. This call for action comes as Yemen seeks to bolster its national security and stability.

Yemen’s Diplomatic Appeal at International Atomic Energy Agency

During a recent meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors, Yemen’s Ambassador to Vienna and Permanent Representative to the agency, Haitham Shuja’ al-Din, reiterated the country’s demand for Iran to cease its destabilizing activities. He highlighted that Iran’s continued support for the Houthi militia with arms poses a significant threat to both Yemen and the broader region. Consequently, Yemen requires international support to safeguard its territory.

Strengthening Yemen’s Governance and Security

Ambassador Shuja’ al-Din stressed the importance of taking concrete steps to support the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government. He called for efforts to restore state authority and enhance its capacity to protect vital maritime routes in Yemen. These routes are crucial for the country’s economy and security.

Discussion on Iran’s Nuclear Commitments

The meeting also addressed the verification and monitoring of Iran’s nuclear activities under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, adopted in 2015. Participants discussed Iran’s violations of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) due to its suspension of commitments related to its nuclear program.

Broader Topics of Discussion

In addition to the focus on Iran, the meeting covered various topics related to nuclear science and technology. Discussions included the application of safeguards in North Korea and Syria, Israel’s nuclear capabilities, and the ongoing situation in Ukraine. These discussions reflect the IAEA’s commitment to addressing global nuclear challenges and ensuring international security.

In conclusion, Yemen’s call for action against Iranian arms flow highlights the urgent need for international cooperation to restore stability in the region. The discussions at the IAEA underscore the interconnected nature of global security issues, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts to address them effectively.
