WHO: Europe faces deadly heatwaves, with an estimated 200,000 deaths reported.

WHO Warns Europe Must Strengthen Heatwave Protection

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning that Europe needs to enhance its protection against extreme heatwaves. As the climate crisis accelerates, temperatures in Europe are rising faster than anywhere else in the world. Hans Kluge, the WHO’s Regional Director for Europe, reported that over 200,000 people have died across the continent in the past four years due to heat-related causes. He described heatwaves as a “silent killer,” emphasizing that their effects can be mitigated with available tools.

New Guidelines to Protect Vulnerable Populations

During a special event in Berlin, Kluge presented updated guidelines for managing heatwaves. The event featured German Environment Minister Karsten Schneider and Berlin Health Senator Ina Czyborra. The focus was on safeguarding the elderly and other vulnerable groups, as health risks associated with heatwaves continue to rise.

Climate Change: A Tangible Reality

Schneider highlighted that the impacts of climate change are now evident worldwide. He noted that protection against heatwaves has become a social issue. Urban residents living in overcrowded and poorly insulated homes struggle significantly to shield themselves from high temperatures. Therefore, governments must implement effective measures to address these challenges.

Proposed Solutions to Combat Heatwaves

The German minister outlined several solutions to tackle heatwaves, including:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Expanding green spaces within cities.
  • Increasing the number of trees, gardens, rivers, forests, and wetlands.

These initiatives aim to lessen the effects of extreme heat, which are becoming more pronounced each year. By doing so, they contribute to safeguarding public health and ensuring daily life remains manageable.
