Water and Environment Minister explores desalination options for Aden’s seawater.

In a significant development for the city of Aden, Yemen’s Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, convened with a specialized team from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the provisional capital, Aden, to discuss the progress of projects and interventions implemented by the program. A pivotal point of their meeting was the final results of the feasibility study for establishing four desalination plants in Aden, along with the discussion on the appropriate technical and technological options for the project.

The meeting, attended by both national and international technical teams, reviewed aspects of the study, which included the selection of four specific sites for optimal evaluation. Three of these sites were chosen, taking into consideration a decentralized approach for the distribution of the plants.

Engineer Al-Sharjabi lauded the significance of the study, which is expected to provide a clear vision for the project’s execution, especially given Aden’s looming water crisis in the coming years. He highlighted ongoing consultations with the Green Climate Fund for the program’s financing, in addition to significant interest from various donor agencies. A conference to discuss the desalination project in Aden is scheduled for next October in the Netherlands, promising wide participation from relevant local and international bodies.

Al-Sharjabi emphasized the importance of including a clear mechanism for partnership with the private sector in the study, aiming to develop a comprehensive and coherent vision for desalination in Aden and the coastal regions at large. This initiative marks a critical step towards addressing the city’s water scarcity issues, with the potential to significantly impact the region’s sustainability and resilience.
