Water and Environment Minister discusses water sector support with donor group.

Yemeni Water Sector Receives International Support

In a significant move towards bolstering Yemen’s water and sanitation infrastructure, Water and Environment Minister Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi engaged in a virtual meeting with the head of the donor group for Yemen’s water sector, Marcella Masiarik, in the temporary capital, Aden. The discussion focused on the group’s support for the water sector, marking a pivotal step in addressing the country’s pressing water challenges.

Strategic Partnerships and Plans

The meeting delved into the activities and plans being prepared to support the water sector through donor agencies in the coming period. It also highlighted the preparations for the upcoming Environment and Peace Conference scheduled to take place in Berlin at the beginning of October. This conference is expected to play a crucial role in setting the stage for future initiatives and collaborations.

Minister Al-Sharjabi pointed out several issues related to supporting the water sector in various governorates, particularly in the temporary capital, Aden, which faces significant pressures in securing water and sanitation services. He emphasized the efforts to provide water services in the cities of Taiz and Al Mukalla, among other major cities, and noted the ministry’s support for the Donor Coordination Group’s efforts to enhance the role of local authorities in a comprehensive framework for national service provision.

Emphasizing German-Yemeni Cooperation

Marcella Masiarik underscored the importance of the partnership and close cooperation between the Yemeni and German governments across various sectors, including water and the environment. She highlighted the need for a shift towards strategic support and expressed the German side’s readiness to promote governance and work enhancement at both local and central levels.

Masiarik also mentioned the current focus on improving water access for citizens in Taiz through a targeted project aimed at enhancing the capabilities of relevant local authorities and stakeholders. Additionally, a project targeting Aden, which will include the water and fishing sectors, aims to improve resource management, demonstrating the coordinated effort to address water and sanitation challenges effectively.

Conclusion

This meeting between Minister Al-Sharjabi and Marcella Masiarik represents a critical step forward in international efforts to support Yemen’s water sector. With strategic partnerships and targeted projects, there is a renewed hope for significant improvements in water and sanitation services across Yemen, addressing one of the country’s most pressing humanitarian challenges.
